I watch a significant amount of Casey Neistat videos. His work is admired by many, so I’m not unique in my appreciation. He has an eye and ear for shooting and editing video, acquired from years of hard work.
Last summer I wanted to dabble in making videos of my family primarily because of Casey. His voice and style made me happy in my life. And he has lasting time capsules of events in his life. I bought a Sony RX100 V (looks like they are up to the VI as I write this) with side business money and began to record.
As expected, it is hard to find and frame and all the things that are required of videographers/vloggers. But I did manage to get some clips. It definitely helps when children you find adorable, and are yours, are doing the things they do.
But actually putting the video together seemed insurmountable. I offloaded all the clips, organized them, backed them up, and let them site, idly. For months. And then the fainting thing happened and I’ve been on a creative tear. I finally decided to sit down and do the work. I had never used Adobe Premiere Pro before (FCP guy, a decade ago) but I had access to it. So I got started.
One of the things that occurred to me, almost immediately, was that the clips dictate the music and the music dictates which feeling of the clips you want to capture. I went through archives of known music artists from Casey’s videos (feet of the master, and all) and one track from Joakim Karud absolutely nailed what I was going for.
And it all finally came together. And it makes me so. freaking. happy.
Thank you Casey. Thank you Joakim.
