- Learning from my kids
Today’s items have a theme: we went to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science (DMNS) yesterday! Backstory…Amanda was called up for jury duty so I took the day off to babysit. KIDDING! (We like to laugh when Dad’s “babysit” their own children. It’s called parenting, being a parent, being with your own kids. You don’t babysit your own kids. Sorry, that’s a lot to cram in parentheses.)
Where was I? Right…I stayed home with the kids while Amanda went to our local courthouse to serve. Since we homeschool/unschool/teach what we can whenever we get the chance, I planned a quick and fun activity just to keep the mind loose. I don’t want to feel like a “substitute teacher” when I’m with the kids during the week. “Yay, Dad’s here, we don’t have to do school today!” Goes against my ethos.
So we knocked that out, had some fun, grabbed food for lunch once we got there and headed to the museum. The last few years here, Amanda’s uncle and cousins have gifted us with funds for a year-long membership to a museum of our choosing. We’ve selected DMNS for the last couple years and we love it! Amanda brought it up as an idea for us and I immediately jumped at the recommendation.
We wandered around, unscheduled, saw what we saw, learned new things, and explored tactile exhibits throughout. The kids showed me their favorite areas and we didn’t come close to covering all that was available. My favorite place is the Discovery Zone. There are so many things to do and try! Machines, levers, rubber pellets, tunnels, animals on which to climb, lightboxes, balls and pipes, ah! It was so great. What a fantastic day!
